Keshi pearls are different from cultured pearls because they are formed without human intervention, even though the cultured pearl industry makes their formation possible. They are also different from natural pearls because they are by-products of pearl farming. Keshi pearls are formed when an oyster rejects a nucleus or the nucleus and tissue separate, causing the oyster to produce a pearl without a nucleus. They are made entirely from nacre.
