The Swallows Collection

In my work as a jeweller, I'm continually fascinated by how a piece of jewellery can become so much more than merely an object. Pieces can carry with them such deep meaning and significance that it can become a cherished part of a family's history.

This fascination and understanding is central to how we approach each new collection. We design with specific moments and meanings in mind, aiming to create pieces that will serve as a source of inspiration and memory for years to come.

The new Swallows Collection is no exception. As we developed it, we were moved by stories of support, faith, and reassurance for loved ones setting out on journeys and travels.

The swallow itself is known as a symbol of travel, protection, and the promise of a safe return home, and each piece in this collection beautifully captures the bird's graceful form.

The Georgian Inspiration

The collection gained its original inspiration from a Georgian brooch that came across my workbench. During the Georgian period, jewellery often carried symbolic meaning, designs were chosen carefully and the craftsmanship was valued as highly ornate.

Swallows have appeared historically in jewellery as emblems of loyalty and return, particularly in maritime Britain where they were a symbol of safe home coming.

Rather than recreating the brooch directly, we have interpreted its elegant lines and feather texture into wearable forms suited to modern life. The proportions are balanced. The finish is soft and considered. The pieces are designed to be worn daily rather than kept for rare occasions.

The Meaning of the Swallow

As we were designing the collection and talking to family, friends and customers about the ideas we learned just how powerful the symbolism of the swallow was.

We were told of how a swallow ornament had been gifted to a nervous daughter leaving for university to reassure her of the connection to home, how a son was given a swallow charm on a bracelet to wear as he set off for a year's travel across the world as a sign of safe return and protection while on his trip and how a daughter always thought of her late mother each spring when the swallows returned home to nest.

The collection

We designed 3 pieces for the collection, 

• Stud earrings - designed to be subtle and understated while still offering symbolism for everyday wear. 
• Drop earrings - designed to introduce gentle movement to the birds as they move through life.
• Necklaces - designed to sit close to the heart as they bring every day comfort to the wearer.

We created 2 sizes for the collection, the smaller scales are there to feel personal and understated while the larger versions create clear visual meaning.

We hope you enjoy the collection as much as we have while we created it and as much as we will continue to do so while we hear the stories in the shop that it evokes.
